Assalamualaikum and hello.
The Literature Component for Secondary School textbooks (for Form 1 to 3 and Form 4 to 5) are in schools now. These should be used for the teaching of the literature component in the English classroom next year. Here is the breakdown of the poems, short stories and drama that are included in the textbooks, respectively:
Form 1 to 3:
Poems
- I Wonder – Jeannie Kirby
- The River – Valerie Bloom
- Mr. Nobody – Unknown author
- Heir Conditioning – M SHANmughalingam
- A Fighter’s Lines – Marzuki Ali
- Leisure – William Henry Davies
Short Stories
- Flipping Fantastic – Jane Langford
- One Is One and All Alone – Nicholas Fisk
Drama
- Rumplelstiltskin – Angela Lanyon
Form 4 to 5:
Poems
- In the Midst of Hardship – Latiff Mohidin
- He Had Such Quiet Eyes – Bibsy Soenharjo
- Nature – H.D. Carberry
- Are You Still Playing Your Flute – Zurinah Hassan
Short Stories
- QWERTYUIOP – Vivien Alcock
- The Fruitcake Special – Frank Berman
Drama
- Gulp and Gasp – John Townsend
Now, the inclusion of drama is a bit of a surprise. A welcome one though. It should be fun and interesting to teach but with lower skilled students, it could be tough. The cancelation of novels, if it’s true, is a bit discouraging. I’m going to withheld any comment on the choices for the literary texts in the textbooks until I’ve explored them all.

I guess i had it wrong. Further enquiry reveals that novels are still in the literature component. The titles are being finalized. Consider yourselves as being updated.

Hi…yeah…seems like it’ll be a graphic novel…
Black Beauty, Journey To The Centre of The Earth and also The Boscombe Valley Mystery….but seems like there’ll be more update coming soon…
Unfortunately for me…I haven’t got a school yet…will be posted next year…so, I can only get updated from other teachers’ blogs…
Hope I can get more news on it…so worried I cant handle so many new things next year (-_-’)
I don’t like the new short stories or dramas or poems. For me, it’s a little bit sissy compare to the old syllabus. I am now in Form 6. I read the new style, but i hate it.
thanks for the info. I’m kind of mad because the stories are limited. Lat year, they did the pearl for form 5 but now, we don’t even have a novel. People like me( an english language lover) are kind of dissapointed. But never mind. What can we do about it?
do you have the syllabus / scheme of work for the form 4 literature component? teachers have not been called for any courses so i am quite uncertain how to to about…hope you can help

Yes, I think it’s the first introduction of Graphic Novel into the syllabus, and an interesting add too. The students finished reading the novel on the day they got it, without me having to ask them to! I’m having a problem looking for any reference book here in Sabah on the new syllabus, though. Sure hope they’ll be arriving soon!
