Am I Also A Victim?

Assalamualaikum and hello.

I received a phone call yesterday from someone from Kota Bharu. He asked whether I know anyone by the name of Ahmad Shahril Haji Husin. I don’t know anyone by that name so I told him as such. He explained that he had received a letter in which there was a piece of paper with a photograph of the supposed Ahmad Shahril as being a person who had failed to pay up his debt. It also had his IC number and a list of people who are allegedly related to him. My name was in that list, complete with my handphone number and I was described as the brother to this Ahmad Shahril. Oh my! The caller told me he called me up because one of the listed name is his own brother though he and his brother also didn’t know this Ahmad Shahril. Well, I thanked him for letting me know about the letter and not to worry about it. I thought that was the end of it.

Later that day, at 6 pm, a cousin of mine called. He told me that he had received 8 (yes, eight letters) in his mailbox. All contained the same thing. A piece of paper with the picture and name of Ahmad Shahril Haji Husin and the list of ‘relatives’. I immediately went to his house to have a look at the papers. I looked at the picture an sure enough, it wasn’t somebody I know. As I read through, I noticed that 3 of the alleged relatives are actually related to each other, including myself. There is the name and cellphone number of my brother-in-law and also the nickname and phone number of my cousin. It dawned to me right then that the person who called me earlier about this was in fact the older brother of my cousin, whose name was in the list.

You can look at the letter by clicking the image below. I’ve blurred out some information.

Victim 01 Victim 02

Now, the questions are, who is this Ahmad Shahril and more importantly, who had sent these letters? Why were our names listed in the letter? There are a number of odd things in the letter. I was named as Ahmad Shahril’s brother but our dad’s name is totally different and I don’t have any half-brother. My cousin’s nickname was given instead of his real name (and this is only known by family members). The contact number of my brother-in-law given in the letter was an old number. We (I, my bro-in-law and my cousin) don’t know any of the other 3 names mentioned in the letter.

Are we a victim of an Ah Long’s scam? Should I make a police report in case anything happen in the future?

Addendum:

My dad had received 10 copies of the same letter. It seemed that whoever who had sent these letters had use this particular method, he first writes down the name of the recipient followed by the actual address of the recipient, and then for the next 10 letters, he uses the same recipient but only changes the number of the house.

Old School Turns Uber-Metal Cool

Assalamualaikum and hello.

Any of you guys remember Saber Rider and The Star Sheriffs? Forgive me but I’m an animation fan (okay, a cartoon freak). I love my cartoons but not not all cartoons or animations get my undivided attention such as old school ones like Thundercats or Saber Rider and The Star Sheriffs. Imagine my delight when I discovered the opening theme for both while was browsing through the YouTube website. Cool! Then, to my surprise, there was another video made by a young man who call himself PetrucciFever, actually playing the opening theme of Saber Rider with an electric guitar. He calls it Saber Rider Metal Theme and by the way he played it, you might say that is the way the theme should sound like if it was given a metal treatment.

Here is the original Saber Rider opening theme song (click on the Play button):

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

And here is the Metal version of it (click on the Play button):

This is PetrucciFever’s YouTube main site. He has other videos of himself giving metal treatment on various song with his guitar that you may like.

Brand New Mac

Assalamualaikum and hi.

I don’t mean to gloat or even showing off ;-) but I just got myself a brand new Mac. A new MacBook Pro that is. Cost me almost 6000 smackeroos although the real price is actually 7000 smackeroos. How can I get it almost a 1000 ringgit cheaper? Here’s how…

I was actually torn between selling my old iBook off on a Malaysian Mac-dedicated forum or using it to replace the now defunct home server. I needed the money to counter the higher purchase of the MBP but I don’t think the iBook would fetch me a lot, since it was already 5 years old. To have it set up as my home server would mean I have to spend more than what I have set aside for a new purchase. I can always of course get the non-Pro version of the MacBook, which is way cheaper but that is not really upgrading. It would only mean changing hardware.

Lucky for me, my bro who had borrowed some money, wanted to settle his debt. So when he paid up his due, I gave him the iBook. It seemed that he got off with a steal (pay up debt and get a free laptop), isn’t it? You are not looking at the big picture. Not only I get the extra money I desperately needed, I also got my brother in a situation where he can never say no to me for quite a long time. :-D

Why a MacBook Pro? There are a number of reasons really and here are some:

  • Design – I admire almost every designs of the Apple Macintosh family. Just look at the original Bondi iMac, the Colourful iMac, the upgraded iMac SE, iMac G4, iMac G5 and the new Intel iMac. Oh, did I forgot to mention the Colourful iBook, iBook, MacBook and MacBook Pro?
  • User-friendly – The term user-friendly means more than just that with a Mac. The bundled softwares, such as iLife, is actually an extension of today’s digital lifestyle
  • Robust – I found that a Mac is much easier to use and maintain than a Windows machine. I have one of the colourful iMac (Tangerine, in fact) bought in 1998 which is still usable and the iBook that I bought in 2002.
  • Secure – To date, it is more secure that a Windows machine. No harmful malware (yet) compared to Windows. Again, I do need to stress on yet because I do believe it won’t be long before Mac OS becomes the target due to its rising popularity.
  • Intel processor – After years of being loyal to Motorola, Apple finally turned to Intel to power up its machines. That has become a major factor why I am going for an MBP because now I will be able to run Mac OS and Windows on the same machine either via virtualisation or dual or even triple OS boot. I don’t really like Windows but I have a need for it in my daily office environment. I am also learning more about Linux so I might go for installing it on my MBP.

That’s all for now. Until the next entry, I bid you assalamualaikum and bye.

Oh, I am in no way affiliated to Apple or getting any payment for this. I am just loyal Mac user.

Rock Kapak

Assalamulaikum and hello.

To those who visited the previous incarnation of his blog, there was an entry I made about the rising of the Rock Kapak era. Now that the old blog is gone, I thought I couldn’t recover the data for that particular entry until I found the following image in a backup disk. Since I have the song, I think it would be really appropriate to have them both up here in this new blog so that I can test 2 particular plugins I have just installed here (Lightbox and Audio Player) that also powered up the old blog. So here they are:

Click > to play the song and then click the picture to enlarge it.

Don’t forget to click Close X to return the picture to normal.

Time out

Assalamualaikum and hello.

Just came back from a well deserved break with the extended family at Pantai Melawi, Bachok. My sister had reserved us 3 rooms with a local resort operator. Even though it was just for one night, it had helped me unwind. The weather wasn’t really cooperative though. It drizzled when we first got there but the kids didn’t mind at all. It was only after the Jumaat prayer that I allowed them to go down to the beach. Along didn’t waste anytime engaging in his favourite activity at the beach, building a sandcastle. I didn’t bring along my camera with me so Along’s masterpiece wasn’t captured for posterity.

This was the second time for Afif to come to a beach. As was with the first time, he was still afraid with the waves coming up the beach. But he had fun running up and down the sands. I really wish I had taken my camera along but I was afraid that it would get wet in the rain.

As for Angah, Achik and Adam (their cousin), they had swell time playing in the waves. Of course, I had to gave them stern warnings not to go too far from time to time.

All in all, the kids had great a time before I called them in later in the afternoon.

We had brought along some marinated chicken meat and Yusri, my brother-in-law had gone out later in the evening to buy some fish and prawns. We were after all just a stone throw away from Tok Bali, the fishing industy capital of Kelantan. Then my uncle and his family showed up with some more fresh prawns and we had a simple BBQ that night. Simple but really appetising and delicious. We then settled in for the night except for my uncle and his family which headed back home since he had to go to work early the next day.

Rain poured down heavily during the night and this morning. We made up our mind to pack up and head on home, since it would be pointless going to the beach in this weather. The waves also seemed a little bigger that yesterday’s. The kids were disappointed of course but understood the reasons why. All the way home, it rained.

Here are the pictures (click on any to enlarge):

Welcome to the fourth reincarnation of my online ramblings. Yes, you read it right. Fourth. Or is it the fifth?

Well, my home server has finally been laid to rest. It has been shutting down intermittently for the last month. I tried going through the logs but couldn’t really decipher what was there. For the last 4 days, it shut down immediately after I booted it up. So yesterday, I took it apart and realised that the hard disk was really hot. I mean really burning hot. I don’t exactly know why but I replaced the hard disk (after waiting for it to cool down a bit) with a spare albeit older one that I have laying around. It booted up fine. Probably someone out there can explain to me why and how a hard disk can be so hot after being booted up just for a few seconds.

Well, I decided not to make it as a web server anymore but instead a network access storage or NAS where I can save and access my files and documents anywhere within my network. As for having my own space online, I decided to find a commercial web hosting solution. At least an affordable one. I found the one I like at mesrahosting.net. I have to pay RM100 for a 1 year hosting and another RM50 for domain registration. Quite cheap compared to other web hosting which ask for at least RM200 for hosting alone.

Again, welcome and thank you for visiting. Until the next time, assalamualaikum and bye.
